Crews are making steady progress despite strong winds and dropping temperatures after a wind storm swept through most of the lower and upper Michigan on Thursday. The wind storm caused significant, widespread power outages for utilities across the state yesterday, including approximately 22,000 services on PIE&G’s system. About 15,570 services have been restored now and approximately 6,060 services are still out. PIE&G received an unusually large number of 911 Emergency calls for downed power lines, requiring immediate attention and resources, and the tree and line damage is extensive throughout its nine-county service area. The largest number of outages are reported in Cheboygan and Montmorency counties.
Persistent winds are causing more falling trees, and are contributing to additional new outages. Crews have replaced five poles already, and found at least 5 more broken poles so far. These repairs and tree removals from lines require additional time to complete. Extra equipment and crews from Kent Power, Wolverine Power, Campbell Electric, and Thumb Electric Cooperative were brought in to assist PIE&G with their efforts. PIE&G will continue to complete restorations while working as safely and quickly as possible. With the extent of the damage, some repairs will continue into tomorrow. Members who are still without power today, should prepare to be without power another day. PIE&G extends it appreciation to members for their patience and understanding.
PIE&G members should contact PIE&G immediately at (800) 423-6634 to report their power outage or any downed power lines. Stay at least 25 feet away from any downed wires, assume they are energized, and report them immediately to PIE&G or local law enforcement (911).
